Music Trendsetter [Chart 2 = July 30 - August 5, 2011]

This week, a lot of newcomer songs entered the chart, and eleven songs shared the top ten seats. Unfortunately, some of the well-loved songs last week were booted out on the chart (including the OPM songs), and most of the remaining songs dropped down by few notches. Now, it is in you to make your favorite songs come back and take a seat at different positions on the chart on the succeeding weeks. Just vote at the poll situated at the sidebar or visit http://polldaddy.com/poll/5267213 (if you wish to add another song on the poll list, just leave a comment below the survey).

On to our countdown this week, the Korean female quartet Miss A managed to share the ninth spot with other songs. Good Bye Baby is their newest single under their first full-length album A Class. The catchy tune and upbeat tempo of the song gained interest on their Korean fans and other K-Pop supporters in some parts of the globe. However, its music video is quite dragging and feels very lifeless. The girls just looked like mastering their singing and dancing acts on what they rehearsed earlier. On the positive note, the rap part of the track is quite neat and refreshing to hear. Also, they presented energetic dancing scenes throughout the video. Nevertheless, this song contains an acceptable routine and is flair enough to keep an average K-Pop fan busy.

Debuting on the sixth spot is Taylor Swift's new single entitled Mean in her acclaimed hit album, Speak Now. This song talks about Swift addressing her critics who still don't believe her capabilities as a singer. In addition, Mean is a song that reflects the issue of bullying, which can be utilized as a part of anti-bullying campaigns for schools across the globe.

Sharing the sixth spot with Swift and another placer is Trinidadian recording artist and songwriter Nicki Minaj with her single Super Bass from her album Pink Friday. This song made Minaj as her catchiest song yet, making it very appealing to pop audiences. Listeners love to push the replay button for a few times to heat the ultra-catchy boom badoom boom chorus and Minaj's rapid-fire rapping. However, the song is quite light, breezy and inconsistent. Nevertheless, the song carries a breezy tune that creates it a perfect summer song.

Sitting at the third spot is the American rock band Maroon 5 with their song Never Gonna Leave This Bed taken from their third album entitled Hands All Over. This ballad song was written by Adam Levine. It was reported that Levine wrote the song after having a weekend bender. During that time, his energy was dragging low, went home, picked up his guitar and start composing the song. The lyrics of the song is very simple and pleasing to hear, complimenting its sweet sound. The video features Levine and his girlfriend in three different bedding scenes.

Sharing the third spot with Levine and his band is Taylor Swift's another hit track entitled Speak Now still coming from her recent album on the same name. This upbeat song was about interrupting a wedding ceremony, inspired from a conversation Swift had with her friend whose ex-boyfriend would tie a knot to someone else. This song was released as a promotional single and garnered critical acclaim in the United States and Canada.

Katy Perry is still dominating the chart. However, she is sharing her spot with another new song from a hit K-Pop girl group 2NE1. I Am The Best, just like the other lead singles they released, offers everything that the group sets out for their fans - their fashion sense, upbeat tempo, fierce verses, and high-energy tune that can be played all over again in different clubs and night outs.

On the chart this week, Miss A's Good Bye Baby enters the chart at the ninth spot sharing with Secret's Starlight Moonlight, which falls six spots from number three; Rihanna's California King Bed from number six; and Bad Meets Evil featuring Bruno Mars' Lighters, coming from the fifth spot. Rolling in the Deep seats with Taylor Swift's and Nicki Minaj's new songs at number six, while OneRepublic's Good Life dips a notch from the second spot, sitting beside another Swift song and Maroon 5. Katy Perry's Last Friday Night still reigns at number one for two weeks, sharing with 2NE1's I Am The Best.

On Vamps, Doppleganger, and Wolves [The Vampire Diaries Season 2]

The second season of the series based on a book series has proved again that it is one of the most cunningly constructed and well-acted prime time dramas on the television nowadays.

The Vampire Diaries is an American television series that centers on the events in the little town of Mystic Falls, where it is haunted by supernatural beings. The first season focuses on a love triangle between Elena (the female protagonist) and brothers Stefan and Damon with dark pasts. Later on the season, it revealed the mysterious past of the town, including Elena's spiteful doppelganger named Katherine who seeks revenge. The slight weakness of the first season is that they assimilate characters who were not that involved on the supernatural aspects of the series.

In this season, they introduced some supernatural aspects of the story. They created a werewolf story that centers Tyler (a friend of Elena's), the curse of Katherine's determination to cause mayhem, and introduction of new characters that have existed prior to Stefan and Damon's conversion into vampires. Also, supporting characters like Caroline (Elena's friend who turned into a vampire), Jeremy (Elena's brother), Tyler and Bonnie (Elena's friend who revealed as a witch on the previous season) gained a bigger part in the story. In this season, they present more interactions with some characters who don't share a lot of screen together on a previous season. When it comes to the romantic aspect of the season, they developed another relationships: a love triangle between Caroline, Tyler and Matt (Elena's ex-boyfriend) and the blooming romance of Jeremy and Bonnie.

The second season also introduced new characters to meet: Tyler's Uncle Mason, the black sheep brother of the late Mayor Lockwood who has a hidden dark past, and some new-old vampires Elijah and Klaus who are more powerful and ruthless, making Katherine and Damon look angelic in comparison to them.

This season got a lots of ups and down, and as the mythology is being revealed, it becomes convoluted and cloudy at some point. However, it turns into a well-crafted and developed series compared to the previous one. The casts really pictured out their characters and their development as the series is on going. Nevertheless, the second season of the Vampire Diaries is a worth show to watch, leaving the viewers thirsty for more.

Music Trendsetter [Chart 1 = July 23-29, 2011]

Hey y'all! Sorry if I wasn't able to keep track on this blog site due to some personal reasons. With these, there are impending series reviews, personal movie critics, and weekly charts to be posted. In the meantime, we'll be counting down the most voted new songs in the music industry. These songs are voted from the poll situated at the sidebar and tabulated based on the votes accumulated for a week.

Entering at the tenth spot, Britney Spears' third single from her seventh studio Femme Fatale managed to hit the mainstream radio playlists across the globe. I Wanna Go a dance and upbeat track that includes the element of techno and heavy bass. The song's lyrics featured Spears singing about losing her inhibitions, accompanied with a whistled melody and stuttering vocals. It garnered mixed to positive reviews from the music critics. Although the song successfully effective on highlighting its hook, nearly all vocals of the song were processed. The song topped the South Korean International Chart for three consecutive weeks and managed to enter the top ten in France, Canada, Sweden, Australia, Slovakia, New Zealand, Philippines, and in US. Its music video depicts Spears daydreaming at her press conference about a series of events, including being chased by paparazzi, cyborgs, and being rescued by actor Guillermo Diaz.

Tied at the sixth spot are 2 OPM songs and two international hits. The Philippine band Tanya Markova is known as the group that has the uncanny ability to produce tracks that are out-of-the-box. Their first single entitled "Picture Picture" became a hit on various radio and music television charts since early 2010, garnering over 70 thousand views on You Tube. Most of their songs are filled with idiocy, sarcasm, and childish ramblings. Most of their track titles from their self-titled album are parody of celebrities, movies, or fictional characters, like Bampira, Linda Blair, and their current hit song which entered our charts, PA Roadie Fernandez.

Another song placed a notch in the sixth place is Rhianna's California King Bed. After her upbeat songs like Only Girl (In the World), What's My Name, and S&M peaked at the top spot, Rhianna went into a very diverse direction. The song speaks about a demise of a once-great relationship, wherein Rhianna sings about how she is desperate to let her lover show his real feelings. This track is a good change of pace for Rhianna, although she still follows a routine pop-ballad arrangement. The song gained mixed critics, praising her powerful vocals and criticizing its impact to listeners.Nevertheless, the song gained moderate success in the international scene, reaching the top spot in Poland, and peaking the top five in Austria, Australia, Germany, and New Zealand.

OPM band Parokya Ni Edgar joins the six spot with their song Pangarap Lang Kita. This song is the fifth track and the second promotional single from the band's latest album entitled Middle-Aged Juvenile Novelty Pop Rockers. Pangarap Lang Kita has three different music videos, one with their collaboration with Happee Sy, the second video presenting the main point of the song, and the third one with a funny twist in it. This song received good reviews in the Philippines, and peaked at most of the radio and music video channel charts.

Completing the circle on the sixth spot is from the American electro-hop recording duo LMFAO's Party Rock Anthem. The track was released as the first single in their second album entitled Sorry for Party Rocking. It also features Lauren Bennett and Goon Rock. The song mainly speaks of dancing and drinking at a club, meeting a number of hot girls, and then taking one of them at home for the night. It often interpolates the lyrics from the song Hustlin' by Rock Ross. Party Rock Anthem topped at number one in Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Rounding up the fifth spot is from the reunited American hip hop duo Bad Meets Evil's single entitled Lighters featuring Bruno Mars. Royce da 5'9" and Eminem released this track as a second single from their first EP Hell: The Sequel in June 13, 2011. The song started playing on the mainstream radio on July 5, 2011. The song mainly tackles about people who have hated Eminem and the rising fame of Royce da 5'9". The track incorporates pop and soul music, featuring instruments like bass, cymbals, keyboards and percussion. The music video is still on progress, although it began shooting at July 20, 2011.

The only K-Pop song in the countdown managed to grab the third spot along with a British rising diva. Just a month ago, Secret unleashed their much-anticipated comeback track in Korea entitled Starlight, Moonlight. This track contains a sweet, retro-flavored track that make listeners refreshed and pleased. Bringing the whole new era of retro cuteness, the track gained popularity in some countries in Asia, particularly in Japan, Malaysia, and the Philippines. It has been climbing quickly at number one on the radio, Internet, and in music channel charts.

Sharing the third spot from Secret is the rising British diva Adele, with her phenomenal hit track Rolling in the Deep. It is the first single from her second studio album, 21, which considered to be a crossover hit across the globe. The track wastes no time in acknowledging the stunning authority of Adele's voice. She started proclaiming the rise of emotion on the song in less than five seconds, resulting in fantasies of revenge and vengeance against a former lover.

Claiming the second spot is the American rock band who become the most prominent unsigned act in a social networking site back then - OneRepublic. Good Life is the fourth single from the band's second studio album entitled Waking Up. The song speaks about how the singer feels blessed by citing the places he's traveled and the experience he encountered. It clearly states that the song resonates both literal and interpretative level, bringing the listeners into another level of relaxation and making them relate to the song.

Katy Perry is reigning in the top spot with her song Last Friday Night (TGIF). It is her fifth single in her third studio album Teenage Dream. It became a phenomenal hit as it seats at the top spot on most music charts across the globe. In this track, Perry speaks about partying with friends and getting drunk on the best nights of the week. Also, it uncovers Perry's inner geek, as evidenced in the mid-tempo, light-hearted beat of the song. The song's music video features some of the well-renowned celebrities, including the viral star Rebecca Black.
